Dr. Shem Malmquist is a Visiting Professor at Florida Tech's College of Aeronautics specializing in aviation safety, accident investigation, and risk mitigation. His work applies system safety engineering methods—particularly Dr. Nancy Leveson's STAMP framework—to understand the decisions operators and manufacturers make to strengthen safety in complex aviation systems. Drawing on 29 years as a widebody captain and extensive experience in major accident investigations, human factors, and airborne weather radar, automation, pilot personality, and Loss of Control–Inflight, he contributes subject-matter expertise to the lab's research projects.
