Bio
My research focuses on the zoanthid species, Palythoa caribaeorum. This species is prevalent in the Florida Keys Reef Tract, especially in the Lower and Middle Keys. P. caribaeorum is a colonizing species, and it covers substrate and coral structure. There are varied opinions on how it contributes to overall net carbonate production, with some concerned that it is competing with corals for space, while others think that it could be stabilizing reefs and protecting corals from further bioerosion. I will assess the relationship between P. caribaeorum cover and carbonate production across the Lower, Middle, and Upper Keys. My research aims to further the understanding of the ecological role of P. caribaeorum in coral reef ecosystems and inform conservation and management efforts in the Florida Keys Reef Tract.
