Dr. Deborah Carstens is a Tenured Professor of Aviation Human Factors at the Florida Institute of Technology and Director of the Human Factors in Aeronautics, Safety, Sociability, Interfaces, Stress, and Training (HF ASSIST) Lab. She also serves as Site Director for the FAA’s PEGASAS Center of Excellence. With a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering specializing in Human Factors, Dr. Carstens has authored over 85 peer-reviewed publications and four books. Her research focuses on aviation safety, human performance, Human Systems Integration, AAM, UAS, ergonomics, risk assessment, task analysis, and error analysis, with funding support from the FAA, NASA, ORAU, SBA, FL DOE, DARPA, TRB/Virginia Space Consortium, and the DHHS. A former Human Factors Research Engineer at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center for 11 years, she brings extensive experience in safety assessments, usability testing, and system design to advance aviation and aerospace safety. She has chaired or served on over 70 dissertation and thesis committees and has extensive experience mentoring graduate students across various aviation and human factors research areas.
