The Common Reading Program
Florida Tech’s One Book, One Campus program kicks off for Fall 2010 with the national bestseller, The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. This campus-wide common reading program is designed to bring the Florida Tech community together through activities, discussions, and workshops throughout the Fall semester.
Common Reading and University Experience
At Florida Tech, the common reading title is part of New Student Orientation as well as the University Experience course, with The Tipping Point serving as the primary text for the curriculum. All incoming first-year students are expected to read The Tipping Point before arriving at Florida Tech in order to most fully participate in activities and discussions centered on this book.
About the Common Reading Program
The idea for a common reading program at Florida Tech began with two of the University’s most dedicated faculty, Dr. Gordon Patterson and Dr. Robert Taylor of the Humanities and Communications department. Their discussions with President Catanese laid the groundwork for a University-wide initiative to take root. At Florida Tech, the common reading title is featured prominently in the first-year seminar course for incoming students. For faculty and staff, there are multiple independent “book club” discussion circles. In addition, Dr. Celine Lang, Kathy Turner, and the rest of the Evans Library, along with the Academic Support Center, co-sponsor Fall semester workshops focused on classroom application of ideas presented in the book.
